FAQ on getting started and programming your
AR 8200/AR 8600


AOR Wide Range Receivers are unlike other scanner radios you may have used before. They are intended for the demanding user and built to high precision standards. AOR Wide Range Receivers are often found in service with monitoring professionals including public safety (police, fire and medical), laboratories, radio repair facilities, news gathering operations and by military and law enforcement users.

In order to excel in its multiple roles, your AOR receiver has many settings that allow the user to customize its functions. We strongly emphasize the need to become familiar with the operating manual and learning to use the receiver by operating the features as described in the booklet. This will help ensure your satisfaction and make you aware of the higher capabilities found in AOR receivers.

Q: I have just opened the box. How can I test my AOR Receiver ?
A: After you have attached the antenna(s) connect the receiver to one of the provided power sources:
  1. Press . After the greeting message,
  2. Press <2VFO>.
  3. Then enter a known operating frequency, such as a broadcast FM station in your area, using the keypad. If a station is operating in your area at 88.1 MHz, enter <88.1> then press . Be sure the volume knob is set approximately 1/3 to 1/2 way and the squelch is set to minimum. You should hear audio if the frequency you entered is active. Instead of a broadcast station, you can also try to receive NOAA weather radio broadcasts on 162.55 162.40 or 162.475 MHz.
To receive an AM broadcast station operating on 550 KHz, press <.55> Then press . To receive an AM station on 1090 KHz, press <1.090 > then < ENT>

Q: How can I enter stations into the memory banks ?
A: PFirst, you must understand the configuration of your receiver's memory. There are 20 memory banks identified with upper and lower case letters: A ~ J and a ~ j. Each of those 20 memory banks can hold 50 frequencies, (00~49). Memory positions are displayed as A01, C03, j45, f12, E49, d00 and so on. Avoid manually programming frequencies into memory bank "J"; it is reserved for "auto-store" memories as described in your manual.

To enter a NOAA weather station into Memory slot B01,
  1. Press <2VFO> then press <162.55 + ENT>.
  2. Press and hold until you hear a beep. You will see a screen that displays the frequency you have selected. Below that will be a display that says "M-WRITE". On that same line, you will see a memory position. Using the roller knob and LEFT and RIGHT rocker switch on the side, you can select the memory position you desire, such as B01 or g08. If you do not desire a line of text to identify the memory channel, press and you are done! If you do want memory text, go to the next step.
  3. After having selected a memory location, you have the option of adding a line of text to identify the frequency you have entered. If you desire to enter a text identifier, press the "down" direction on the rocker pad. Then using the roller knob, select the characters you wish to identify that particular memory. To advance to the next space, press the "right" position of the rocker pad. When you have completed the text, press again and your data is now saved into memory!
Q: Can I use a computer to manage the memory of my AOR Receiver ?
A: YES. Free software is available for downloading from the AOR web site, www.aorusa.com. Many users find this method to be an easy, efficient method for managing their AOR Receiver.

How do I scan a memory bank?

Press . Using the rocker pad, select the memory bank you wish to scan, such as B or i. Then, simply press again. It is possible to designate multiple banks to be scanned. Refer to your operating manual for instructions on this advanced feature.
